The Spec Stage III+ clutch is slipping under peak torque, so the dyno had to be done from 4500-8K rpm to avoid slippage at lower rpm.

The Wagon doesn't really look like an XC anymore - but I still prefer the XC bumper, so I have just modified it to suit my needs

My daughter ran her wagon out of gasoline. The car now occasionally stalls.

I want to change the fuel filter in case trash from the bottom of the tank has clogged the filter, but much to my surprise, the filter isn't where the Haynes manual promised it would be. I now see that it is mounted over the rear axle and must be reached through access panels in the spare tire hold.

Is there a walkthrough posted somewhere I have missed with the search function?

If not, any tips would be appreciated on what needs to be removed to access the panels and filter. I assume that otherwise the job is similar to later model XC's

Thanks,
I have a friend here that can get me a substantial discount on Bilsteins so long as I can provide him a part number. Does anyone know the reason why the struts are different? Is there a way to make the FWD Bilsteins work on my application?

Thanks,

Reading all these sad stories as to how people bought an early model XC that was bought from a neglectful owner, I figured I'd try and liven up the forum by giving a success story:

After my old 1995 850 was totalled (tractor trailer truck collided into my car) I took the insurance and bought a 1998 v70xc from my mechanic. My mechanic only services Volvos and is very well known within the community as a good/honest guy. So, I bought the car from him.

The car came with a thorough history of repairs, routine service, etc. The records show the following replacements:
1. Fuel pump replacement (I guess the XCs are weird with their fuel pumps, you gotta raise the car and drop the tank to replace the fuel pump)
2. Ignition cylinder replaced (I believe this is common)
3. Timing belt (next one due at 180k)
4. E-brake repair
5. And a long history of routine maintenance including and not limited to transmission flushes, oil changes, wheel rebalancing, etc.

The vehicle was (and still is) immaculate, the leather seats are plush, the A/C blows frigid cold air, the seat warmers are nice and toasty, the engine starts with nothing less than two cranks of the engine, the transmission feels quick and responsive. The car even has that stupid black velcro bumper cover that goes under the trunk. Thus far the only thing I had to replace as of last week was the catalytic converter... the car made this subtle rattling noise while at a stop sign in drive. At first, I thought it was the internal cabin fan, but after turning that off... it still rattled. I took it in to the mechanic, I guess the internals of the cat came loose - 740 bucks later, I got a new cat. Also, there's some rust around glass frame for the sunroof - at some point I'll have that replaced.

Bottom Line:
It's obvious that the previous owners had put some love into this car. It's a fine car and will last for a long while, but you have to make sure that it's well cared for. The chances of finding a good early model XC are low, and even when you do find one - there's still stupid things like a faulty catalitic converter that may fail (however this could happen on any car). It actually amazes me as to how well the damned thing works granted that she's a city car in San Francisco.
