I've been doing a lot of work on the '02 XC70 lately, and it is coming along nicely, but there's a vibration that I need help pinpointing before throwing parts at it. The car is very smooth at speeds up to about 75 mph and has a pretty serious shake from 77 to 85 mph. It gets a little better approaching 90 and doesn't get any worse over 100. It seems to be coming from the rear as I don't feel anything through the steering wheel.

I removed the driveshaft last weekend as I was hoping the loose center bearing support was the culprit - no change. The shaft needed to come out for rebuilding anyway. The tires have also been balanced to no avail. Other recent work includes upper and lower engine mounts, front control arm bushings, and LF wheel bearing. Work yet to be done includes front struts (presumed bad spring seats, all loosey goosey) and shocks (because 106k miles). Probably unrelated and a very minor complaint, but there is also a slight vibration under heavy acceleration at low speeds; I'm looking at the right axle which has started to throw grease.

My first thought is that a shock has failed and is allowing wheel hop at speed, but the tires are wearing perfectly evenly with none of the characteristic diagonal wear pattern. What else goes bad on these? Control arm bushings, axles, or?

Thanks for any input,

I warped my new Napa rotors. Now the car shakes. [cussing]

I do want to know if I just got them too hot, and explain how I got them that hot.

Going east out of Beckley WV on I-64 toward Hinton/Rainelle, and I was going down Big Sandstone Mountain with my 2000lb enclosed trailer behind, doing about 65 down the moutain. I had to come to a complete stop, as a truck had gone off the last runaway truck ramp and came back onto the interstate on it's side, and traffic was blocked. I saw some brake smoke rise from my wheel arches- it was likely the hardest braking I've had to do. It's about 6% or 7% grade, and I've had no trouble before.

Do you think it's the rotors quality, or expected from such? I've driven this several times before with the Volvo rotors, but never had to completely stop.
I believe it's things like this where the quality (or lack thereof) is truly shown, IMHO.

I'm going to weigh them against the brembos when I get them.

I have been trying to find some clunking noises coming from my 01 V70 XC that i have been noticing these last 4 -6 months when driving over potholes or rough pavement. It sounds like it coming from the front wheels/ strut towers and I have been methodically trying to determine what the problem could be. I have done the following corrective work trying fix this irritating problem.

1. New Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires
2. New front struts, complete with new springs and HD Meyle mounts, spring seats and hardware. I also replaced the strut lower mounting bolts
3. New Meyle HD sway bar end links
4. New IPD sub frame bushings inserts

I am planning on replacing both control arms (Meyle HD) and ball joints (Lemforder) which are about 4 years old next week.

I have also replaced all of the motor mounts with the exception of the lower rear support within the last 18 months.

The tie rods end and one inner were replaced 6 months ago during an alignment.

I know that trying to find noises coming from the suspension system can be somewhat challenging from a vehicle that is 12 years old, but I would like to hang on to my Volvo XC for a another year or two.

Any help would be appreciated!
How come the 2008+ forum has so little activity? Is that because 2008+ is less persnickety? Or is it just because there are less of them?

Thoughts?

Active duty AF pilot getting ready to move to England with our '05 XC70. In order for it to pass inspection, I need to have the rear fog lights light up on the drivers' side. No problem, right? But the drivers' side in England is the passenger side in 'merica. So....anyone know how to swap the rear fog light functionality to the *passenger* side? To me, it looks like the same bulbs and what-not....am I looking at re-wire of some sort? Thanks in advance for the help!

-I'm attending a professional school in San Diego, CA.
-Last weekend I had my wife drive over and trade me cars leaving me with the XC.
-Tonight, the XC started dripping oil out of the motor.

6 weeks ago, I changed the timing belt and accessory belt along with the front suspension and rear control arms.

There hasn't been a problem since today. Wife says she hasn't seen any messages or idiot lights in the past month since a brake light went out.

I don't even have the tools available to take the top cover off so I can do a proper visual inspection, nor the time.

So please suggest a mech if you know of one, I honestly don't have the free time to fix anything right now, and it needs to be up and running before I get ready to leave this school.

I Appreciate the read and all of your support.

To think, I have done as much as I have without the help of any CD's, I'm amazed. That's changeing, as I have the CD's coming. [thumbup]

I'm going to try to replace what I think is the source of a new leak, which seems to be coming from the front main seal on the crankshaft.

Do I need a puller to get the sproket/balanacer off? Is this more than a shade tree amatuer mecanic should tackle?
