I have drive shaft bearings for 98 and early 99 volvo xc70, you don't need to replace whole drive shaft if you just need to replace center bearing
there are two types 1 inch bearing and 1 1/4 inch depending on the vin, don't pay 1000 to the dealer when in most cases all you need is just the bearing.

here is a video showing my mechanic replacing drive shaft bearing on early 98 xc70.

let me know I have few of them, each cost 150 plus shipping.

Hi,
does this hold true with a 2004 XC70, my car is in the shop right now and the Dealer is telling me that i have to replace the whole drive shaft because you cant replace the bearings seperatly. $1700. If what you saying is true for a 2004 as well that would save me a lot of cash.

Hi Vtrader,

My 1998 Volvo V70XC is currently in the shop with a worn out bushing assembly. I received the same story...you have to replace the whole driveshaft. Do you still have some of these bearings left? If so, are they new? I am wondering if this a custom fabricated part that you made?

Thanks!

Hello

Yes I do have few of these bearings, please give me your vin so I can tell you which one you have installed, there are two sizes,

I have sold many of these bearings and they work great, I think these are OEM bearings.

Ive got a corner stuffed with about 10 of these suckers down at the shop. ALL with bad center bearings. How do you replace the ones with shimmed in u-joints is the question? I don't think it's possible...

what year drive shaft do you have, late 99 and 00 can't be separated but all 98 and early 99 can have the bearing replaced and I have both bearings and have sold many of them,

Arj -if your center bearing is shot, more than likely the CV joint on the front of the shaft is toast (literally) from being baked by the heat of the cat converter next to it. My center bearing was shot at about 208K and when I pulled the shaft also found the front CV joint in bad shape. Presently running without the shaft in full time FWD, will likely replace it with a reman one from Colorado Driveshaft. Think the last time I checked their Web site, they were asking less than $500 for the 98XC shaft assembly. Changing just the center bearing will likely be a waste of time and money unless you have access to a lift to do the labor yourself and want to gamble that the front CV joint will last much longer.

It's a total waste of time
Replace the entire propshaft
I think C/D is closer to $400 now even for retail customers

Thanks Stonington XC70
I like your interim solution of removing the rear shaft and driving FWD. But is there a differential function in the transmission that will make the rear shaft coupling spin with no load? ... And lose torque in the front?
Will check the full shaft options . Thanks

Huh?
Just remove the propshaft and drive the wagon. It then drives like any other FWD Volvo will drive.

The drive shaft on my 2000 XC with 180,000 miles, is shot. Been reading many of the posts on this forum detailing driveshaft issues and possible repairs.
If I simply removed the driveshaft and had car run in FWD mode is there a risk to the car in doing this long term? I live in NC and we don't get much snow/ice and I have other 4x4 vehicles for those conditions.

Just wondering about the utility of replacing the drive shaft as much as I've read on the issues associated with this aspect of the car.

Car runs great otherwise .

Did you read the above?
No!
It will be the same as a FWD Volvo
You will have a smoother, nicer driving wagon, get better mileage, with no more drivetrain noises, no more worrying about matching tires and no more worrying about when the AWD will break!
Go ahead and remove it.

I have my 33,000 mile  2000 V70R and the propshaft is removed if for no other reason that I don't need AWD in this vehicle so there is no reason to abuse the system and whenever I do finally decide to sell her for a s*it load of money :D it will be fresh, solid and not worn out! [thumbup]

Besides that, it's faster and quieter

Thanks for the confirmation. I did read the string of comments but just needed to be smacked on the back of the head sure.
I look forward to all the good attributes you note and the elimination of the other hassles associated with that drive shaft.
Very nice looking car, by the way.
